“As an artist, I’ve explored a variety of genres. Starting out, my principal focus was portraiture. Since living on the East End for the past decade, however, I've found myself drawn to the light and movement of the land and sea as well as the mystery and metaphor of abstraction. In recent years I have derived deep satisfaction from the serenity and beauty of still life.
The still lifes I create are contemporary; they provide a contrast to the traditional opulence found in the Dutch still-life tradition. My work alludes to the classical themes such as memento mori in the rendering of broken branches or withered leaves and in my celebration of everyday objects. As for inspiration, I rely on arrangements drawn from life, personal photographs, and imagery collected from various sources. Often the flowers and vessels in which they are arranged are placed on pedestals, testament to how much I treasure the calm they afford.” -LE
