George Singer
George Singer is a self-taught artist working from his studio in East Hampton, New York. He was born in Baltimore, MD and originally trained as a writer, receiving a BFA from the University of California, San Diego, and an MFA in Playwriting from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Singer shifted his focus to painting a decade ago. The narrative sensibility of his writing — open-ended, unresolved, searching — continues to inform his visual language. With no formal training, his work evolves from a deeply personal dialogue with paint, embracing spontaneity and restraint in equal measure.
Singer’s work has been exhibited across the East End and New York City, including Guild Hall, Folioeast, Ashawagh Hall, Ille Arts, The National Arts Club, and Sara Nightingale Gallery. In 2020, he was featured in Hamptons Artists: Current Wave, a survey of contemporary artists working on Long Island’s East End.
I approach painting as a non-verbal, open form of expression, into which I can enter - as one might enter into a meditation, where there is only a vocabulary of color, shape and texture.” — GS
